Start by counting people, identifying dietary and accessibility needs, and finding what you already own. Establish a portable 3-day kit before buying a large reserve. Put water, no-cook food, light, medicines and contact information where every household member can find them. Plan around your real storage space and budget.
Build toward two weeks gradually, using familiar foods instead of buying one enormous survival bucket. Mix protein sources, grains, fruits, vegetables and fats. Check the calories and servings on each package. Label storage dates, review medicine refills with a pharmacist and practice using lights and radios before an outage.
Evaluate a longer pantry reserve only after the basic kit works. Identify safe resupply options, alternate accommodation and transportation if roads or fuel access change. Recalculate the counter when guests join your household. Do not count foods you cannot prepare, empty water containers, or supplies that belong to a different household.
